Let Black Voices Be Heard

Shortly after reopening our doors at the end of May and welcoming our beloved staff back, we as a small yet mighty team of four, two Black and two White, began convening to explore what we as a team, as a business, as members of our community could do to use our energy, frequency and vibration to advance the cause of justice and redress racial inequality that was in alignment with who we are. It was Thayer who first planted the seed for us to think in terms of energetic spiritual reparation, and to begin the work of balancing centuries of fear, hate and pain with a consistent, persistent counter balance of acceptance, appreciation, recognition, and Love. There are many ways for this to be expressed and many resources are available. All will be needed on this journey of a thousand steps. As a team, we ask that you deeply listen to and learn from Black voices as a compassionate witness.

"What is human warfare but just this; an effort to make the laws of God and nature take sides with one party."

~Henry David Thoreau

The Voice of Thayer“Many have asked what can be done and what actions can be taken to support the Black Lives Matter Movement. As one voice among many, who identifies as Black, I ask what can be done to support and hear the African-American community, ancestry, and children to come.Though a movement is essential, we need more than a movement. What good is movement without perspective and orientation? We need a clear direction, a firm foundation, a pathway to follow. Though there are many immediate and helpful actions to take, the answer does not lie in a quick fix.For over 400 years, cruel and inhumane hatred and blame has been projected onto African-Americans and people of color. We have been propagandized, targeted, gaslighted, and exploited, but no longer. As a collective human race, we must acknowledge our past ignorance, and individually take full responsibility for both our actions, and inactions, which have brought us to exactly where we are now.The path we walked before was forged in fear, confusion, pain, and anger. I empower YOU to lead others in a new direction. A direction rooted in compassion and understanding. For generations to come, let us shower the African-American peoples with acceptance, appreciation, recognition, and Love.Let us commence in spiritual reparations, and bring all our relations into balance.Let us open our eyes to the beauty in all peoples of the earth.”

"History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if face with courage, need not be lived again"

~Maya Angelou

The Voice of Alex“What is important for me personally, is to recognize Black LGBT lives, because we are in June, Pride month, and the first Pride was a riot against the police, by black trans women. We need to acknowledge the fact that we have the rights that we do because of black LGBT lives, and to honor that, but to also say that we can’t do it by ourselves. You can lead the fight, but you can’t finish it.People tend to think of Santa Barbara, CA as a “special place” where “racism doesn’t happen,” and so a lot of things just get swept under the rug. But we need to fix things here just like everywhere else. Earlier this week someone decided to deface the George Floyd mural on Haley Street with the phrase “All Lives Matter.” We need to fix things here just like everywhere else.People outside the Black community need to not look to black people to explain racism, discrimination, colorism or homophobia. You can and should take it upon yourself to go and learn about these issues. No, you won’t know exactly what the experience feels like, but you don’t have to touch the fire to know it burns. It’s SO much easier to learn about racism than to experience it.Everyone should take the time to learn about it, and to understand that racism is so deeply ingrained in our system -- it’s what our systems built on, that you can be a really good person, with a really great heart, and still take part in racism, and do racist things.People need to be able to swallow that very hard pill of “I’m a good person, but I can still be racist, and I can still participate in racism.” It doesn’t mean you are an evil, terrible person who wants to go out and lynch Black people...It’s time we set aside all the differences, whether it be race, sexual orientation, gender identity, age or religion and realize that we’re all human, that we’re all people, and we all deserve the right to live life not in constant fear. It’s the simplest thing, like how your heart rate picks up a little bit when you get a black cashier instead of a white one. It’s those little tiny things, and it’s gonna take...a long time, to really get it all out and fixed and done, but... Now’s a better time to start than ever.”
