About the Chimes' Unique Design

Over the years, creator Larry Roark perfected the array of pitch ranges, the offerings of musical scales, the design and materials, and the distinctive style of matte black tubing with silver accents and a curved diamond-shaped wind-catcher.Music of the Spheres wind chimes enhance the mood of any outdoor space, bringing in melodies from specific world traditions, to complement a landscape and inspire a moment of peaceful relaxation. Music of the Spheres chimes are designed with the precision and skill of any concert-caliber musical instrument.Their unique detachable wind-catcher offers activity control for those extremely windy days, and their movable clapper provides and on/off option as well. (To turn the chime “off” simply slide the clapper from the center of the chime up the center cord and rest it on the ring, outside of the “cone” at the top.) This flexibility is perfect for windy summer nights.

Discover Music of the Spheres' Origin Story

The classically trained musician Larry Roark crafted his first wind chime in 1989. With only a few hand tools, some electrical conduit, an electronic guitar tuner and the sure knowledge that a wind chime could be tuned to symphonic-quality accuracy, Larry went into his garage and created a new musical instrument. His first prototype had a croquet ball-looking clapper. When he showed the chime to his girlfriend, she joking said he could call his new product “Music of the Spheres”. Larry loved the idea, and a company was born.

What is the "Music of the Spheres?"

The ancient Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras first theorized that the stars and planets moved according to mathematical equations which corresponded to musical notes and thus produced a symphony, the "music of the spheres." The concept persisted...Shakespeare referenced it inThe Merchant of Venice,Act V scene I:"...There's not the smallest orb which thou behold'st But in his motion like an angel sings...." Johannes Kepler's Harmonics Mundi (1619) discusses it.Babcock used the reference in 1901 in his popular hymn,This is My Father's World,in the line, "all nature sings and 'round me rings/ the music of the spheres."In 1999, NASA and MIT determined a super massive black hole in the Perseus Cluster sound a B-flat, albeit one too low for human ears. In a 2006 experiment, Greg Fox determined that orbits of celestial bodies could produce (through manipulation) sound. Thus modern thinkers have proven Pythagoras and Kepler correct.

Larry Roark is the original founder of Music of the Spheres. He graduated from North Texas State University cum laude with a degree in music theory in 1978, and played with many groups including the Clyde Beatty-Cole Brothers Circus band, the Austin Symphony Orchestra, the Creative Opportunity Orchestra, the Austin Klezmorim, the Vascilating Discombubulators, and the Austin, Tx First Baptist Church voice and handbell choirs.

Larry had a passion for beauty and spirituality which he expressed through music and art photography. At Music of the Spheres, Larry's vision was simply to make the most durable chimes of the highest acoustic quality possible, the Stradivarius of windchimes.

Since his passing in 2001, the living legacy of his masterful crafstmanship has been taken up by a talented group of people hailing from many diverse backgrounds, cultures and musical heritages.
