Losing your shit….going off the deep end…falling apart…feeling lost…
Losing it…you know when the inner peace goes out the window and the panic, anger, or fear takes over? No one likes feeling like they are losing it, but the fact is, that “losing It” is part of “finding It”. It’s part of the “life-classrooms” we co-create for ourselves or arenas in which we are challenged to move with grace and poise; to choose understanding and compassion, over fear and angst. So how can we keep our equanimity, maintain our presence and thereby access our inner power? Unless we had these emotional obstacle courses we might lack the opportunity to practice these empowering skills listed below:
Breathe. It may sound over-simplified, and it may feel annoying when someone tells you to “just breathe” when you’re losing it, but scientific data reveals that slow rhythmic breathing slows down the nervous system from the fight or flight response the body goes into during a meltdown. Plus it positively impacts the body in many other ways, like lowering blood pressure and even changing genes!
Think good thoughts. When slow breathing keeps the nervous system out of excess stress mode, we have more access to brain power and more space to disconnect from stressful programs. Thinking good thoughts is the equivalent of practicing de-attachment from old thought patterns and thought patterns create our experiences. Refrain from the tendency to judge or proclaim a personal assessment as the ultimate truth and you create a huge amount of space and freedom for resolution and transformation.
Respond instead of react. A reaction is based on an unprocessed past hurt. A response is based on being fully present in the moment without the negative emotional charge which characterizes a reaction. Responding while breathing slowly and deeply, also gives us the space to examine our negative programs and unprocessed emotions laying a foundation for transformation. Reserve the reaction and respond in presence, then in a free moment examine the content behind the tendency to react for personal resolution.
While these may be simple tools to practice, I believe these give us the space and ability to hear the guidance coming in from our Higher Selves. Perhaps, this makes “losing it”all that much sweeter, as we gain skill in practicing to be anchored in equanimity, presence and power.
