All God’s creations are beautiful. But there are some that take our breath away more than others, and may make us gasp in awe so deeply that it feels as if we are breathing for the very first time. Hummingbird is one of those creatures.

Her iridescent feathers are reminiscent of the moon’s reflection dancing on the rolling waters of enchanting seas; of mysterious bioluminescent beings underneath; of glittering faerie wings. Hummingbird is lured by the mind-blowing beauty of the rainbow blossom of the Bird of Paradise; the once-in-a-century flowering of a dying Agave cactus; the fragile magnolia and lavender blooms exuding sweetness after a momentary spring time shower.

When she leaves the safety of the shadows to seek her greatest longing, she stays but the length of a haunting dream: a few brief seconds, that linger in our imaginations forever. She is like Psyche herself: flitting, humming, dive bombing in and out of our consciousness, at first randomly, and then, with ever greater sublime synchronicity, until her visitations become part of our every day existence.

Hummingbirds cannot be contained or restrained: put one in a cage and they die within days or even hours. But put out offerings of sugar water and love, sprinkle the flowers gently with the garden hose, and watch, and wait, and pray. If you are still enough,

Hummingbird will show you how you too can beat your proverbial wings a hundred times per second, and yet find great stillness and peace as you hang in midair, drinking in the ambrosia of life.
