Power Animal for July: Lion by 'Backyard Shaman' Amy Katz, M.A.

How would you like to be King of the Forest? Your stealthy prowess ensures successful hunts; few other species will mess with you; when YOU roar, EVERYONE listens!

These days, it’s easy to feel like a mouse; many of us, especially women, are taught to be small, docile and subservient; instead of roaring, we squeak.

Ladies and gentlemen, it is time to step into your lion-hood!

As the second largest felines in the world who show tremendous strength, fortitude and courage, lions have maintained their mythological status throughout time and cultures. The Greeks immortalized Lion in the story of Hercules, the strongest man on Earth who slayed the Leon Nemeois as the first of his 12 labors. This lion was a great beast whose hide was impervious to the sword: The Gods immortalized him in the sky as the constellation Leo.

Those born under this noble sign know well the personal power of the kingly cat. The life of the party, the scourge of the negotiating table, the stud of boudoir. Lions don’t bow: they lunge. It’s easy to miss a mouse in the corner of the room, but not a lion standing in the middle of the table stating, “Look at me!”

But lions are not self-centered, as the astrological experts often depict. They are among the most social of felines, living in prides most of their lives. They hunt, suckle their young and live in harmony together; often showing affection for friends by licking and rubbing heads. This is an important reminder that even as we assert ourselves, we are part of a community. When we roar or fight, it must be for the good of others. Lion Kings have power, and power means responsibility.

Lions don’t run around like chickens with their heads cut off: They spend upwards of 20 hours a day resting and reserving their energy. When the time is right for action, they stalk their prey with an intelligence rarely seen in humans. They only pounce when the time is right and they have reached maturity.
