Power Animal for June: Pig, by 'Backyard Shaman' Amy Katz, M.A.

If I called you a pig, would you punch me in the nose?

Those familiar with this abundant creature might say “thank you” instead. For Pig is both the embodiment and symbol of fullness, prosperity, spiritual richness and fortitude. It’s little wonder that we store our money in “piggy banks”!

Pigs are part of the Sus genus, which also include wild boars. Have you ever seen a boar “boar” through the forest, in hungry pursuit of it’s dinner, or fleeing another creature’s plate? Speed, plus power, plus sheer pig-headedness ensure nothing gets in Pig’s way, or stays in his path for too long. Couldn’t we all use those qualities when running towards our vital goals?

It is largely the Pigs' high intelligence that has enabled them to survive in the wild and captivity (with numbers now in the billions) even though some species have been domesticated since 13,000 BC. Because of their historical longevity, they are symbols of staying power and the kind of wisdom that only comes from life experience.

Buddhists believe the ear-shattering squeal of the sow teaches us that presence can shatter illusion, obliterating all mental constructs: the gateway to enlightenment. This squeal is also the cry of compassion, an admirable sound that opens the heart of all who hear or make it http://www.khandro.net/animal_swine.htm.

Pigs in many cultures represent desire. The shadow side of desire is gluttony. But desire held in balance equals life force, motivation and procreation. It also reminds us humans of our animal natures which should not, and cannot, be denied. When we are cut off from our carnal urges, life looses luster and meaning. If you are depressed and don’t have much energy for moving in any particular direction, give your inner Pig permission to run wild.

Pigs root out the Truth with their snouts, then hold their heads high in dignity: and so should you. The next time someone calls you a pig, squeal with laughter, and thank them for calling you one of Mother Earth’s wisest, most passionate and luckiest creations.
