Commonsense Almanac By Ben Commons | October 2025

“Learning to live in the present moment is part of the path of joy.” ~Sarah Ban Breathnach

Tips for almanac use: All the aspects can be felt in advance. It is good policy to view these as due dates for various energies and prepare accordingly for your context. It’s akin to bringing an umbrella with you when rain is expected, but it also helps us to not take the weather personally. When we proactively manifest these symbols then the world doesn’t have to do it for us. Choose to be con(with)-siderate(the stars). Reach out to me for personal explorations of these times.

October. Well, it is much more relaxed than September was, but we’re still digesting and integrating last month throughout October. It’s all been a lot, so now we can make our best effort to stabilize our soul ships and get back on track towards more normalcy and greater awesomeness. October starts off with this game of catch up, but then on the 21st, we start venturing back into the cauldrons of everything to further boil things down to their essence and rid the pot of impurities. Gentleness towards oneself is very helpful these days, and we should probably spare some of that for others as well. Let’s go, because what other choice do we have anyways.

Mercury squares Jupiter on Wednesday 10/1 at 1:58 pm Pacific. This presents a good opportunity for us to brainstorm more with our people. There’s great value in reflection, even if it’s simply found by hearing how we phrase and frame our thoughts into words. But let’s make sure to have an open ear as well. Let’s talk it all out and trim the idea pile later.

Mercury enters Scorpio on Monday 10/6 at 9:41 am Pacific, until 10/29. This will ultimately be very complicated because Mercury will leave Scorpio after three weeks, but then circle back for another few weeks. So, lots will get stirred up on this initial visit and the momentum we set is extra relevant. The simple summation is that we need things to sink our teeth of enthusiasm into; whether that’s new passions or revived pursuits, we should be on the lookout for something to fuel us. Without these, we tend to wither. So, dive in.

The Full Moon in Aries is on Monday 10/6 at 8:47 pm Pacific. This is actually rather relaxed except that this lunar cycle started with an eclipse, making it subversively supercharged. It wants us to be ever-more comfortable showing up as our current selves within our relationships without imposing on or hurting others. We’re all still recovering and processing the last month and a half of busy times and curious revelations, so tact is important. This favors consistent sharing and being as opposed to grandiose bursts. Even keeled is the way.

Mercury squares Pluto on Tuesday 10/7 at 7:40 am Pacific. This is about digging deep into our own psyches to see what needs removal. We should be finding anything and everything that gets us locked into old patterns and hooked into reacting to others and the world. This normally includes ample mental editing, but it’s really more akin to spelunking into our caverns and locating the lost treasures and the un-exorcised demons. However, don’t take it all too seriously or it tends to take a toll on our quality of sleep.

Venus opposes Saturn on Saturday 10/11 at 4:10 am Pacific, pulling up more old issues to process. Self-love should be the focus, which entails releasing and attempting to forget the projections of others and whatever narratives we internalized throughout our journeys. This is a delicate task full of various threads that need untangling without attachment. Let’s honor and grieve while moving on.

Venus enters Libra on Monday 10/13 at 2:19 pm Pacific, until 11/6. This is normally a very nice and relatively straightforward placement. Neptune and Pluto are altering that dynamic and tempting us both towards rose-colored glasses and towards much darker envisioning of what’s to come. Of course, the middle ground is recommended, but the extremes and the lack of clarity could make us feel like a motorized teeter-totter of emotionality. Remember to breathe and to not take things personally.

Venus opposes Neptune and trines Uranus and Pluto on Monday 10/13 at 6:15 pm and Tuesday 10/14 at 7:09 am and 4:44 pm Pacific. This is another wild and topsy-turvy jumble where we see ourselves outside of ourselves, except with a definite fun-house of mirrors vibe. The way to go is to use our self-support structures and to accept, own, acknowledge, and love our truest selves regardless of how others play along or not. Find the tangents of innocence and tie them back into the core narrative: They will be necessary.

Pluto goes direct on Monday 10/13 at 7:52 pm Pacific, beginning the resolution period from this whole calendar year, but especially whatever was brought to the surface in the last five months. We’re looking at the oldest of the old, the ancestral patterns, the origin stories of it all, and of humanity as a whole. The aim is to surrender and relinquish whatever weight we still carry from all these sources and to cleanse deeper than imaginable. Feel through it and allow the process to unwrap the layers.

The Sun squares Jupiter on Thursday 10/16 at 10:42 pm Pacific, promoting some optimism, but with strong caveats. It’s good to have faith and an idealistic bent towards life, but there’s also our history and our wounds lurking behind the corner, whispering words of defeatism. Somehow, we need to integrate both sides into a functioning modus operandi, where we care for our tender spots while striving to grow into the next leveling up. Stay open.

Mercury conjoins Mars on Sunday 10/19 at 11:51 pm Pacific, sending whirlpools a-swirling. This is the epitome of thinky-feely, where the emotions overwhelm the supposedly rational mind. The focus should be on feeding our passions, and from that, our souls. Life is meant to be relished, but we need projects and pursuits to get immersed in and lose our normal selves. It could be as simple as listening to more much-loved music to help get the emotions flowing.

The New Moon in Libra is on Tuesday 10/21 at 5:24 am Pacific. Another peaceful lunation; and one that brings long-awaited resolution to the last couple of months of rip-roaring wildness due to eclipse season. This really is about recalibration towards more peace and balance, within and without. It may be about finding and celebrating our own sanctuary in contrast to the tumult of the world or it could mean we are exposed to the big world and still manage to stay calm and centered. Either way, cherish those who do get you and keep that inner circle close.

Neptune returns to Pisces on Wednesday 10/22 at 2:47 am Pacific, until 1/26/26. This is way too big to summarize. It will be a three-month opportunity to dive back into the spiritual depths, the ancestral accumulation, the societal sediments, and basically everything that ends up as leftovers. At its highest, this is about our relationship with the eternal, the divine, the beyond, and our inner/higher selves. But then there’s everything else that can clutter and obscure this feeling of being swaddled by the universe and accepted into some kind of wholeness. Let us take care of ours and then let us let go and let… something beyond ourselves take care of the rest.

The Sun enters Scorpio on Wednesday 10/22 at 8:51 pm Pacific. As per usual, we should be attending to our emotional reservoirs and purging what’s necessary while embracing more invigorating currents. However, this Scorpio season is all sorts of extra. There’s going to be extremely pronounced emotional vulnerability issues, a profound need to speak our truths, and temptations to sting those that are not on board with our developments and feelings. It’s still safer to process things within ourselves before engaging in challenging conversations with others, but sometimes we do need to have those talks. But find as much clarity as possible first; these times are more than they seem.

The Sun squares Pluto on Friday 10/24 at 8:07 am Pacific, dredging yet more into the light of day. At its base, this is about how much we are affected, especially emotionally, by worldly events. We could choose to stay in a state of reaction to things beyond our control, or we can use what free will we have, with our ongoing momentum, to steer our ship towards calmer currents and great comfortability. It’s always easier said than done, but it’s a worthy aspiration.

Mars trines Jupiter and Saturn on Monday 10/27 at 11:18 pm and Wednesday 10/29 at 12:05 pm Pacific. The pivots around the eternal dance between optimism and hope versus doubt and fear. What lies in the middle now is what we choose to do with our energy and our attention. Do we react? Or do we actualize ourselves and our goals and foster the best bubble of awesome around us? Choice does play an oversized role here, so give yourself time before committing to any particular direction. And don’t forget the foundation; our instinctual wisdom and intuition.

Mercury enters Sagittarius on Wednesday 10/29 at 4:02 am Pacific, until 11/18. Another complex one because Mercury’s retrograde will see it backing out of Sagittarius for a while. The core here is about which direction we are taking ourselves, our quests for learning, and our needs to venture into uncharted territory. We are usually well served by exploring different perspectives and vantages on the familiar topics, but we need to leave room for adjustments once Mercury changes direction. Venture forth.

Mercury opposes Uranus on Wednesday 10/29 at 12:35 pm Pacific, throwing wild filaments throughout the ethers. So, we’ll all definitely be very low on tolerance, but also over-eager to blast through whatever we have perceived to be holding us back. Reality is so slow to catch up to our visions and realizations, but that’s reality, so we should probably adjust our expectations as necessary. But this is definitely a potent moment to dream the impossible dreams of how awesome we could be if we could get out of our own way and fully on our path towards awesome town.

So, October, who knows how much less burdened we could find ourselves if we optimize your offerings. Let us leave ample room for the unknown and the mystery of it all and let us savor every bite and be thankful for our progress down our paths.
