New Moon in Sagittarius

The Sagittarius new moon on Monday, December 14, 2020, is a total solar eclipse. It is joined by the planet Mercury. So the spiritual meaning of the new moon December 2020 astrology relates to how you think and communicate.

Traditionally, it's a time for introspection and reflection.Since this particular new moon is in Sagittarius, a sign known for optimism, spontaneity, and a sense of adventure, it also represents an opportunity to be bold.

Sagittarius is a mutable sign meaning that it shakes loose one energy in preparation for the next. It’s a sign in between seasons. It’s no longer fall but it’s not quite winter. Mutable signs want to move things about. They were also called double-bodied signs and with Sadge this is quite literal.Half-horse-half-human, the symbol for this sign is a centaur and therefore moves in multiple ways. The half that is horse has stamina for days. Perhaps we could say that there is a mad dash kind of quality to the sign. Rushing through the details, Sagittarius might rely on over-exaggerations to make its point. Try telling a thoroughbred to go slow. Try telling an archer not to shoot. Try telling a Sagittarius to calm down.

Sagittarius has an insatiable appetite for knowledge, a great desire to roam, a yearning to grow, expand, open, excite, inspire, ignite and generously share its philosophies. The sign is magnanimous, hopeful and wants nothing more than to seek out wisdom. Something wonderful is always waiting just round the bend which is why this sign is happiest out on the open road.

A new moon in Sagittarius ask where are you going? What are you learning? Is it making you a wiser, kinder person? Neptune reminds us that we have the power to dream a new way of being into existence. Chiron wants to know how we are healing.

The whole combination wants to know: Where are we going as a culture, as a world, as a people? What is our vision for the future? What do we stand for? With an earth that is being sucked dry of its resources at an alarming rate, what does our journey mean if it isn’t connected to healing, rejuvenating and restoring balance?

You can use this new moon to stretch your legs (Sadge rules them), get on your horse (or equivalent), and dive fearlessly into a grand new adventure. You can use this new moon to make a vision board of the dreams that you hold for your life, all the places you wish to visit (both inner and outer) and what you wish to see come to fruition. You can also use this new moon to see where your greatest desire intersects with the world’s greatest need and then move steadily in that direction. ~excerpted Chani Nicohlas

Solar Eclipse

The total solar eclipse in Sagittarius occurs on December 14th, days before some of the most important astrology of the year. Both a visually spectacular event and an astrologically potent one, in Sagittarius, this eclipse will put an emphasis on our belief systems, our laws, the ways in which we travel (or not), and our educational institutions. Occurring near the south node, this eclipse signals a moment of personal and collective release and change. If we need it, it offers the kind of restructuring that can steer our lives towards a more honest and meaningful direction. ~Chani Nicholas

The Great Conjunction

On December 21st, right after the solstice, Jupiter and Saturn will form what is known as The Great Conjunction, ushering us into a new era. For the first time in a couple hundred years, this conjunction will take place in a new element, and therefore denotes a paradigm shift. Air is the element of the intellect, the social sphere, and communications. The Great Conjunction occurring on the solstice, a moment historically equated with new beginnings, is a far more powerful initiation than the turning of the clock to January 1st, 2021. Make sure you mark this date and use it to set your intentions. What we begin now has incredible staying power. ~Chani Nicholas

Ways to Celebrate Winter and Plant the Seeds of Spring

"In seed time learn, in harvest teach, in winter enjoy."

~William Blake

Candles, fires, illumination, celebration of the return of light

*Setup a sacred space for meditation or reflection, it can be simple and yet complete. A cushion on the floor, a stick of incense, a chime or a bell…This month, you can aim higher by going within. Create space to truly excavate and align with your highest aspirations and greatest destiny path. Think focused and clear, rather than broad and dynamic.

*Create a winter altar using natural materials you find outside, with candles to illuminate and add warmth to the shortest days of the year. Leaves, seeds, berries, stones...You may be inspired by the ancient tradition of bringing the outdoors inside for Winter Solstice and Yule celebrations--use branches of evergreens to symbolize continuation of life and renewal; spiky leaves and bright red berries of the holly bush for protection; vines of ivy to represent the bonds of family and friendship, and mistletoe for love and peace.

*Journal, to illuminate the soul…In the dark of winter, seeds of new growth lie just beneath the surface, gathering energy to burst forth in spring. Write freely and see what emerges. Just because the earth is cold doesn't mean there's nothing going on down there in the soil. Think about what lies dormant in your own life right now, and consider what may bloom a few months from now.

*Vision board--draw on the energy of Sagittarius to explore and imagine new beginnings, or to develop your personal mission statement.

*Walk outside on a chilly day, feel the wind and breathe deeply. Be in the world, and reconnect with the essential unity of all Beings…feel the aliveness of the world around you, and all the creatures, plants and people living their lives alongside you. We are not alone!

*A hot cup of tea in a comfortable chair—be present and enjoy the small comforts that life affords. Winter reminds us how lucky it is to be warm and safe, and the value of being able to rest and recover. (Try Magic Hour Teas, a delicious luxury line of teas created in Ojai. You can find their "Goddess Green," "Lucid Dreams," and "Child's Pose" teas at Paradise Found.)

*Hot soup, hearty stew, roasted vegetables…There is real delight in sustaining life with simple recipes and home cooked meals. Open-ended experimentation, tactile sensation and flavor magic…

Yule Tree Blessing

By the powers of earth, I bless this tree,
that it shall remain sacred, a symbol of life,
stable and strong in our home throughout the Yule season.

By the powers of air, I bless this tree,
as the cool winter winds blow awar the baggage of the old year,
and we welcome the brightness of the new into our hearts and home.

By the powers of fire, I bless this tree,
as the days have gotten shorter, and the nights grown dark,
yet the warmth of the sun is returning, bringing with it life.

By the powers of water, I bless this tree,
a gift I give, that it may stay bright and green for us a bit longer,
so that we can enjoy the harmony and peace of Yule.
