In honor of the life and work of shamanic practitioner and teacher Hank Wesselman who died last month after a short illness, this New Moon Book Report will focus on shamanism and its place of power in our evolving world.
“Shamanism is not a religion. It’s a method. And when this method is practiced with humility, reverence and self-discipline, the shaman’s path can become a way of life.”

Like many of you I have long been fascinated with exploring the subtle realms and the shamanic arts have played a vital role in my personal growth process. We are lucky to be blessed with an abundance of resources available on the subject these days.
The Way of the Shaman by Michael Harner is a classic in the field of the modern shamanic renaissance.
Awakening to the Spirit World: The Shamanic Path of Direct Revelation by Sandra Ingerman and Hank Wesselman comes with a CD of drumming tracks to facilitate your shamanic journeys.
Walking in Light: The Everyday Empowerment of a Shamanic Life by Sandra Ingerman is a beautiful and pragmatic guide for anyone seeking to develop a stronger relationship with Nature and the subtle realms.
Another gem by Sandra Ingerman is The Book of Ceremony: Shamanic Wisdom for Invoking the Sacred in Everyday Life. I appreciate how she brings a practical approach to her work. And for more access to her guided journey meditations, this offers seven of them, including finding your spirit teachers and power animals.
One of my earliest teachers on the shamanic path was Alberto Villoldo and this made a huge impact on me. He has others, but this one holds a special place in my heart.
Deep Liberation: Shamanic Teachings for Reclaiming Wholeness in a Culture of Trauma by Langston Kahn is relatively new on the scene and offers insight on bringing ancient teachings forward to help tend to the stresses and triggers of modern life.
Llyn Roberts is a teacher of the healing arts, including shamanism, at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY and at Esalen in Big Sur, CA. She writes extensively about cultivating balance and harmony, connecting with the creative power of Nature, and learning how to develop our inner landscapes.
In addition to books, we have some terrific shamanic oracle decks to choose from. Here are some of my favorites:
The Shaman's Oracle by John Matthews and Wil Kinghan
Shamanic Healing Oracle Cards by Michelle A. Moutuzas
Mystical Shaman Oracle Cards by Alberto Villoldo, Colette Baron-Reid, and Marcela Lobos
Shamanic Medicine Oracle Cards by Barbara Meiklejohn-Free, Yuri Leitch, and Flavia Kate Peters
May you feel blessed as you make your way in life, trusting that you are supported and loved.
“Love is an essential ingredient in all miracles as it is only love that heals. Techniques don’t heal. Where there is an open heart there is the energy to bring through miraculous and magical energy. Love is the great transformer.”
