“Take no notice of the ego and its activities, but see only the light behind.”
~Ramana Maharshi
There is the Sun, its brightness, its allure and what it indicates in our astrology charts. And there is the moment when we realize that our astrology chart is merely a map, a tool to realize on a deeper level not self but Self. Meditation is an ancient tool employed for this purpose. Self inquiry is a tool that Ramana Maharshi advised. The journey to the center of self, by grasping a thread in the natal chart and following it to the core, is a preliminary way to navigate what at times shows up in life as complex and confusing. When the center, so to speak, has been reached an awareness blossoms—this however is not the goal. The goal of knowing self was the beginning. The more we try to discover self we realize there is nothing there to know.Once we have a profound understanding of this self it automatically leads us to the deeper knowing of Self, Truth; that which we are always as compared to the temporary and ever changing identity that we have assumed to be ‘me’ as the self. The journey of self discovery is at least a lifetime endeavor. The astrology chart, as many people may know is a ‘blueprint’ that assists us in reaching our destination. All of the symbols that gather together on the day and time you were born help to give one a sense of identification. The various challenges and victories that one will face this time ‘round’ may ad to, or subtract from one’s identifications.Identity is a profound discovery on way to releasing all identifications that keep us to limited to these demarcations. Where the Sun resides in a natal chart and aspects to it, speaks of what you naturally gravitate toward in terms of reaching an ultimate place of understanding, knowing and balance/harmony.
The Sun represents the goal, our potential. As the brightest light in a chart, it has great powers of attraction and emanation. We attract and emanate according to numerous influences. All the data we have collected along the way contributes to reaching the potential residing in the natal Sun. Everything revolves around the Sun.Most human beings are self-centered until they become Self centered. When we discover that continually feeding and attending to ego/self does not result in a lasting happiness we move through self-centeredness toward Self awareness. We realize that we are not the mind/body and that the small world we consider to be our reality is a creation of the ego that we might feel safer, more secure. The knowingness that develops as we learn more about the nature of self (through the Sun) contributes enormously to the willingness to let go of all the established beliefs that we have identified with over many lifetimes. We gain greater access to Self, our true nature, infinite and eternal.
“It is a matter of knowing that we are something else and more than a few ephemeral emotions in a transient body and the dubious personality we think we are.”
~ Lars Muhl, The O Manuscript
The Sun in the natal chart reminds us of the light we are. We are attracted to its light and warmth, to the life giving force that illuminates our world. Through the Sun we shine forth or endeavor to. At all times we demonstrate, to the best of our ability the capabilities of the Sun. We live and we learn. In astrology, analysis of the Sun teaches us many things. It begins by centering our attention on the development of self. A common question is what is my purpose and am I fulfilling that? When we put the pieces together—aspects, house placement, sign and possibly harmonics* we arrive at a good picture, in this moment, of the cryptic message we all have access to.In the Sun we eventually find clarity. It burns away the clouds. Illusion dissolves. Truth manifests as one who expresses their truth without limitation. Therein is happiness and the joy of authenticity. We arrive here after we have developed wisdom and insight into what does not serve us. We focus on all the details until they all converge into one light showing us the way.
“Details matter. They create depth, and depth creates authenticity.”
~Neil Blumenthal
In the Tarot the Sun XIX exemplifies the function of the Sun in astrology as it depicts a child open and free and happy; fully authentic, free of conditioning, naked and arms wide open to give and receive that which flows freely from our hearts. There is optimism, opportunity and grace. We may grow and deepen all of our worldly experiences as each new day represents the dawning of the unknown.XIX=I which is the Magician and all of the Aces: new beginnings, potential, the energy that gives birth to all new endeavours. In the number I there is power, enthusiasm, insight and a great sense of the adventure that is life. This motivates and moves us to extend our potential and utilize the primal force to create and achieve. There are no obstacles only lessons gladly learned.
In astrology too, we can look at our Sun and know that the power within it, is the motivating force in this life. Whatever aspects there are to the Sun are not obstacles but indications where we may experience ease or we may be tested to overcome patterns that do not serve us. We do not judge our selves regarding these patterns (that in itself is a pattern). As an observer we intend only to let go and accept with ease and grace what is, knowing that what we work with is of great value when otherwise we reach what feels like an impasse. Why do these events keep happening to me? Why do I continue to attract a certain type of toxic person or situation into my life? Many answers to these basic questions are in the natal chart. It is a tool we are given to better discern what life is about. We need not walk around in the dark bumping into things. It may seem dark at times but maps are available to simplify our travels. For example, if one has Pluto in aspect to the Sun, life will be a series of transformations punctuated by ah hah moments that feel intense and perhaps like little deaths. This one is on a fast track to greater awareness and a sloughing of all that one is attached to that is a weight/burden that was never ours to carry.May the Sun shine brightly upon you and may you in turn shine brightly for all Beings!*Harmonics are a mathematical calculation based on a slice of the 360 degree circle that represents the natal chart.. For example the 5th harmonic chart and our potential to create, relates to the 72 degree aspect between planets (5 divided into 360=72 or 144 degree aspect. The quintile and bi-quintile.).
