Hanging Out with COVID19 by Kristine Marie

“…Could it be that this is not the end of the world, but the call to transition as a human race to the next level of our evolution?…collectively transforming from the caterpillar to the butterfly?”

"Babe?...Are you just gonna hang around all day?" "…Pretty much." Still shot from "Just Like Fire" music video by P!nk, for the upcoming movie Alice Through the Looking Glass, starring Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, and Anne Hathaway.[/caption]So here we are, basically hanging out waiting for COVID19 to do with us what it will, protecting ourselves by staying quarantined and protecting others by wearing masks in case we are carrying the virus unknowingly. While we are hanging here, the earth is still turning, the sun continues to rise and set , and the moon continues in its eternal dance of waxing, waning and eclipse with them both. Many of us are more than ready to get down from the tree, eager and anxious even for this to be over. And yet, if it’s anything like the Spanish Flu epidemic that visited a century ago, we are not even through the peak of the 1st of the 3 waves, the 2nd of which will be a doozy!

What is the Hanged Man offering?

"What the caterpillar calls the end of the world the master calls a butterfly."

~Richard Bach, Illusions

From a collective unconscious perspective, we’ve hung ourselves here for a purpose; like the caterpillar, which eats, voraciously consuming the world around him until suddenly inexplicably, it just attaches itself to a branch and goes into its cocoon. In the cocoon the caterpillar liquefies and becomes caterpillar DNA soup, from that soup butterfly DNA emerges & is at first destroyed by the still active caterpillar immune system. Soon enough, though, so much butterfly DNA emerges that the butterfly immune system takes over. Now the caterpillar is a thing of the past, only butterfly remains, completes its gestation process and then, at the right time, in the perfect weather, it bursts out to dry its wings in the sunshine.“…we have the choice to view it from the caterpillar's perspective (the limited view of the ego/personality) or from the Master's perspective (the eternal view of the Soul.)From the Master's perspective a disaster is not a disaster at all but the necessary and wonderful adventure into a bigger life--the butterfly life."

As a species, humans have come too far down a destructive path in regards to our own ecosystem, over-consumption, greed, pollution, etc. We have known we needed to do something differently, but we couldn’t come to a collective conscious decision on how to do so.And now the earth herself has sent us to our rooms, to our respective cocoons. In the meantime, the earth has been recovering, flourishing, restoring herself as is her nature. The evolution process of the planet itself involves viruses as the agents of change. As human beings are an intrinsic element of the earth, whatever we do is also part of the evolutionary process. In our cocoons we are waking up to our sleepwalk of destruction, genocide, sexism, racism, egocentrism, etc. perpetrated on this planet and as we wake up we begin to undo all of the harm and havoc we have wreaked in our immaturity as a species.Humanity is in the end of our adolescence, realizing that many of the choices we made, as teenagers, were not the most supportive to ourselves, or our community. We learned some incredibly important lessons about how to be grown ups; and as human beings, we are learning important lessons about how to be good stewards. To do that, like the hanged man, we have to keep our hearts over our heads.

Transformation is Painful!

“In a world where you can be anything, be kind.”

Photo Credit: Britt Gaiser via Unsplash[/caption]For me, ALL of my dark stuff has been re-introducing itself, things I haven’t dwelt upon in years…Some stuff I have been working through/on for decades in order to love myself, and thought I had pretty much “healed”, has reared it’s ugly head and insists that it deserves love too.In an effort to be kind to myself I took myself for a beach walk and met up with a lovely friend who, when I shared my distress, kept trying, over and over, to help me out of my pain and yet I felt the need to move through my pain.I didn’t just want to feel better, I just wanted to feel everything and move all the way through it to get to the other side. Once I did that I felt better.I have a whole new appreciation for the song below and its newest version by Disturbed:

"Hello darkness, my old friendI've come to talk with you againBecause a vision softly creepingLeft its seeds while I was sleepingAnd the vision that was planted in my brainStill remainsWithin the sound of silence"

~ Disturbed, covering "The Sound of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel

Understanding that what is within is without, and what is above is below, I am sure that I have been tapping into our collective pain and feeling it deeply. And good golly, if we are all feeling this deeply and so few of us have tools to deal with this kind of pain, no wonder the world is in the mess it is! If the amount of pain is any indication of the amount of transformation what a truly beautiful world is in the process of being birthed.

Struggle, Surrender, Discover...

“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.”

~Maya Angelou

Finally, let’s end with the idea of THE LAW OF ASSUMPTION…the assumption that everything has my/our highest and best good in mind, even if it does not feel like it in the moment. That every “NO” is actually a PROTECTION, every closing door points us in another direction to where another door stands ajar waiting for us to push it open.To the caterpillar the cocoon is death, to the butterfly it is birth. In dying to the old, in the complete and utter liquefaction of all that we were, surrendering into the imagination of what we are becoming … we then struggle to break out of the cocoon originally created out of our previous state. Luckily, once we break through, the sun is shining for us and we stretch out our wings and discover that we can fly!

“The breezes at dawn have secrets to tell youDon't go back to sleep! You must ask for what you really want.Don't go back to sleep!People are going back and forthacross the doorsill where the two worlds touch,The door is round and openDon't go back to sleep!”

~Rumi
